Most people generally assume that their lives will be happy if they are in a relationship. While this is often true, the level of satisfaction with the relationship also influences happiness. With this in mind, it may surprise you to learn that middle-aged adults who are unhappy in their relationships are more likely to have suicidal thoughts than single adults. In a study of 382 middle-aged adults, researchers found that those who were unhappy in an existing relationship in which there were unresolved conflicts were more likely to have suicidal thoughts. People who were in a happy relationship had the lowest risk. If you are unhappy in your relationship, you have good reason to seek help.
