Parents of young children and adolescents should know that youngsters’ emotional reactions to crucial events may lead to psychological issues in adulthood. In extreme cases, young children in particular may respond to traumatic events in ways that can later lead them to experience anxiety, depression, and even more serious problems. This association between emotional response to trauma and psychological issues was recently observed by researchers using “neurofeedback,” a type of biofeedback that utilizes real-time displays of brain activity to teach people to regulate their brain function. While this treatment is currently in use with adults, researchers found that it could also be used to help children and adolescents shape their emotions. This positive outcome has important implications for future treatment.
