Male Postnatal Depression
Posted April 15, 2019
Women are not the only ones who are susceptible to postnatal depression. Along with 20% of mothers, up to 10% of fathers also report symptoms of postnatal depression. Not only does the illness affect fathers, but research involving 3,000 families indicates that daughters of men suffering from postnatal depression are also at risk of developing depression by age 18. While sons of fathers with postnatal depression are not at similar risk, researchers believe that girls are at greater risk because they are more sensitive to the way that their fathers interact with them as babies. With this in mind, fathers suffering from postnatal depression have more reason than they might know for seeking help from a mental health professional.
