Postpartum Depression

The birth of a baby is the most life-changing event in a woman’s life. There are so many feelings and emotions that can seem overwhelming at times. Many new mothers experience the “baby blues,” which can last for several weeks after childbirth. However, sometimes a new mother experiences a more severe, long-lasting form of depression known as postpartum depression. This form of major depression includes extreme mood swings, excessive crying, loss of appetite, insomnia or sleeping too much, and intense irritability. New mothers must see their doctor immediately if their symptoms don’t appear to get better. There is no one cause of postpartum depression, although women with a family history of depression may be more at risk.
If you have postpartum depression, it may help to talk through your concerns with a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional. Through therapy, you can find better ways to cope with your feelings, solve problems, set realistic goals and respond to situations in a positive way. Sometimes family or relationship therapy also helps.
P.S. Postpartum depression can happen months after childbirth.
