Self-Esteem

Posted October 18, 2021

Self-esteem is essential, and having healthy self-esteem can influence a person’s motivation, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. Self-esteem is used to describe the way people see and like themselves, regardless of the circumstances. Many factors define self-esteem, such as self-confidence, a sense of belonging, and feelings of competence and security. Self-esteem has an impact on decision-making, relationships, emotional health, motivation, and overall quality of life. However, self-esteem that is either too high or too low can be problematic. People with low self-esteem tend to feel less sure of their abilities, feel unworthy, and doubt themselves. Those who have an overly high regard for themselves may feel entitled, overestimate their abilities, and inhibit their ability to improve themselves.

Although low self-esteem is not categorized as a mental health condition in itself, there are clear links between the way we feel about ourselves and our overall mental and emotional well-being. Low self-esteem tends to work in a vicious cycle with other mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. It’s hard to say which comes first, only that the combination is both common and troublesome.

P.S. Self-esteem tends to be lowest in childhood and increases during adolescence and adulthood.
