The Psychological Benefits of Music

Posted September 20, 2021

Music is the language of the soul. It doesn’t matter if you listen to pop, metal, classical, or country, music is a source of pleasure and contentment. Its effects are powerful and wide-ranging. There are many psychological benefits to listening to music. It can relax the mind, energize the body, and even help with pain management. Music is one way people express themselves. Because it can be an exhilarating mood booster and effective de-stressor, try listening to music the next time you feel emotional or lonely or need some focus and motivation. Classical music has been shown to help people better focus, and music with an upbeat tempo can make you feel energetic.

The idea that music can influence your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors probably isn’t a surprise. If you’ve ever felt pumped up while listening to your favorite fast-paced rock anthem or been moved to tears by a tender live performance, then you easily understand the power of music to impact moods and even inspire action. Plains Area Mental Health takes pride in treating the whole person by assessing both mental health conditions as well as substance use disorder conditions.

P.S. Although the benefits of music are immense, if you are struggling, it is important to get professional help.
